Lawrence A. Young is a musician and music lover who has been a member of the McLean Orchestra board of directors since 2008. Dr. Young graduated from Boston University (B. Mus.) and the University of Minnesota (MFA, DMA), majoring in organ performance and conducting. He has performed hundreds of recitals on organs as diverse as two 1831 American trackers in Nantucket, Massachusetts, a modern German instrument in the 1545 Cathedral of Quito, Ecuador, and the grand instruments in Washington’s Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, National Cathedral and National City Christian Church. He is a past Dean of the Northern Virginia Chapter of the American Guild of Organists and has sat on convention steering committees for the AGO and Organ Historical Society. He has served as music director and organist of several churches in Northern Virginia. Larry has also had a career as a computer programmer.
In a typical concert year he and his wife Margot attend 30-40 performances of orchestras, choral groups, opera, organists, singers, and the occasional National Anthem at Nationals Stadium or Orioles Park. Every day is music day at the Young house, so supporting a fine organization like the McLean Orchestra, which performs a short drive from home, comes naturally.
