McLean Youth Orchestra Audition Requirements

General Requirements

  • Scales (strings only)
  • Prepared piece from standard solo repertoire grade 5 and 6 (VBODA Manual)
  • Sight reading provided by the director

Note:  In order to try out for 1st stands, audition
must include prepared etude excerpts, which are as follows:

ViolinRode #9 (Schirmer) or Kreutzer #35 (42 Caprices) (Schirmer)

ViolaCampagnnoli #32 (International)

CelloA. Schroeder, 170 Foundation Studies – Volume 1, #67 (Carl Fischer)

BassF. Simandl, 30 Etudes, #29 (Carl Fischer) or Francesco Petracchi, #20
York edition).  The Petracchi is an exercise in bass, tenor, treble clef
reading.

Technical Requirements

Strings

  • All major and melodic minor scales up to 5 sharps and 5 flats memorized
    (metronome marking 100 = quarter note)
  • Violin (3 octaves)
  • Viola (3 octaves)
  • Cello (3 octaves)
  • Bass (2 octaves)
  • Knowledge of bowing techniques, such as staccato, spiccato, martelè and
    detachè
  • Proficiency in 3rd and 5th positions

Harp

  • All major scales, hands together, or A, B, C and G in 3 octaves.  Minor
    natural forms of scales, hands separate, 2 octaves.

Woodwinds and Brass

  • Trombone and bassoon players must have a working knowledge of tenor
    clef and be studying alto clef.
  • Clarinet – Transposition A and C.  Clarinet students should
    have an A clarinet available in order to play in this orchestra.
  • Trumpet – Transposition C, F, D, A, E, E flat
  • Horn – Transposition G, D, C, A, E, E flat

Percussion

  • Mallets – Play full range of the instrument.  Scales, plus
    ability to demonstrate single and double stick technique.  (Metronome
    marking 120=quarter note)
  • Snare drum – Both long roll rudiments (open-close-open).  Starting
    tempo 100 per quarter note from the Ludwig Standard 26 Rudiments.  (Concert
    Roll ppffpp).  Rolls –  #5, #7 and #9 stroke; buzz, flam and
    paradiddle.
  • Timpani – Ability to tune timpani as required.
